REMIND ME

REMIND ME Please sing into my itchy ears; the songs of our land, long lost to the lust of lucre. Remind me of the times when we played under the moonlight, Discharging roles of father and mother with the innocence of the mind. When mothers would spank other mother's children for wrong doing without fear of a reprimand. Remind me of the early morning rush to outsmart the others at the community well. Please remind me of the watchful eyes laid in wait for the early morning sacrifices of Fanta and fresh eggs at the bank of the river.  Remind me of the years of innocence. Oh, the yore days of elementary when we exchanged red garri with coloured chalk. Remember misplacing your slate duster? Hmmm. I did, deliberately lost mine a couple of times to spite my seamstress grandma. I ignorantly thought so. Countless times did she replace them. Such naivity!  © ATONYESIA DIMIEARI-PETERSIDE December 2nd, 2020

THE AXE WAS BORROWED

THE AXE WAS BORROWED Ah! The axe! This axe was borrowed, Lord! The axe head has broken Far-flungged into the abyss O, Lord!  The axe was borrowed! Borrowed for the job To put fire in the cold hut That the children may be warm again That a glimmer of hope and laughter may return on their faces.  The axe didn't do the job The axe head has broken Not for carelessness Alas! The axe was borrowed The axe head has broken Fallen into the depth of debt. The owner taunts in derision His threat closes the day His threat opens the day. But YOUR command makes mincemeat Of his threats. YOUR command floats the axe head At YOUR command I picked it up At YOUR command the fireplace reignites Bringing warmth, hope and laughter again. ©ATONYESIA DIMIEARI-PETERSIDE September 28th, 2020

THOUGHT I KNEW IT ALL

I thought I knew it all I thought my head was large enough To embrace To regurgitate the mysteries of the plain I thought my head was large enough To pride myself to have arrived. Alas! The mystic mysteries of the plain have Visited a giddy contraption to my head. My knees have submitted to imbalance My gait has saunted akinbo My pride has evaporated I am like the tall okro plant that acquies To the hunger of the farmer. My proud head is bent Broken Subsumed My neck is stretched like the ostrich I am cladless With tears cascading to my head instead.  I thought I knew it all.  © Atonyesia Dimieari-Peterside 11th February, 2021
