THE AXE WAS BORROWED
THE AXE WAS BORROWED
Ah! The axe!
This axe was borrowed, Lord!
The axe head has broken
Far-flungged into the abyss
O, Lord!
The axe was borrowed!
Borrowed for the job
To put fire in the cold hut
That the children may be warm again
That a glimmer of hope and laughter may return on their faces.
The axe didn't do the job
The axe head has broken
Not for carelessness
Alas! The axe was borrowed
The axe head has broken
Fallen into the depth of debt.
The owner taunts in derision
His threat closes the day
His threat opens the day.
But YOUR command makes mincemeat
Of his threats.
YOUR command floats the axe head
At YOUR command I picked it up
At YOUR command the fireplace reignites Bringing warmth, hope and laughter again.
